Long-form work has always interested me because it requires patience, structure, attention, and sustained thought.
A serious book is planned carefully and outlined before the writing begins. A writer’s voice is pre-formed through experience and emerges on the page through conversation, reading, writing, reflection, and revision.
Good writing comes from understanding the material, knowing what belongs on the page, and using inspired language.
A strong idea is a beginning, but shaping it into a book takes good judgment and time.
Revision is where writing gets sharper, what doesn’t belong falls away, and the voice becomes unmistakably yours.
When I was ten, my geography teacher caught me writing in class and told me to read what I had written in front of the class. It was a short story about a soldier in Vietnam who dies while rescuing another soldier. The class loved it. My teacher assigned me to write another story to read the following Friday.
I worked on that story in study hall and at home all week. It was a sequel to the first story about a different soldier, and instead of being dynamic, it took place inside a single room and revealed at the end that the protagonist was dead. Everybody hated it.
This was my first experience with success and failure as a writer. I wrote poetry and dramatic scenes in high school, then switched to fiction in college. Writing poetry and drama helped me distinguish my prose work.
In my own work, I like experimenting with high and low narrative environments. Slang and elegant English, black comedy, tragedy, homeless and wealthy characters, and fast-paced and slow-paced plots in any genre hold their ground in literature as long as the writing is good.
I took my first ghostwriting job in 2010 and traveled throughout my thirties, getting ghostwriting work through word-of-mouth thanks to our dependence on social tech. Early in the pandemic, I visited Boston and eventually returned to New York City.
Today I'm based in the Upper East Side and love living and working in one place.
